Law Enforcement Launches "Hands Across the Border" Campaign to Prevent DUIs in the Southeastern States

GEORGIA- Chattanoogapulse.com writes that the "Hands Across the Border" campaign to prevent drunk driving and enforce DUI laws is in effect in Georgia this summer. The program started as a competition between police officers in Georgia and Florida to see which police force could  effectively decrease drunk drivers in the area around the border between the two states. More states have since joined in, including South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee. The program is believed to have saved many lives throughout the southeastern part of the country.*

Police have been struggling with changes in driving patterns and challenges in enforcement that were created by the pandemic. Still, officers are working to make the roads safer by stopping people from engaging in dangerous behaviors, including drunk and drugged driving. 

In Georgia alone, 375 people died in drunk driving collisions in 2018. That number indicated an increase of five percent as compared to the prior year. One in four people killed in traffic accidents in the state tragically died because of drunk motorists. This year deaths dropped. In fact, a decline of about twelve percent was reported at the beginning of 2020 as compared to 2019. However, traffic dropped by somewhere between twenty and fifty percent indicating that crashes per miles traveled went up. 

Nationally, about one person dies in these crashes every 50 minutes. In 2018, these crashes led to 10,511 fatalities. 

A representative from the Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety stated that even one death caused by drunk drivers is unacceptable.
