Crash Leads to Six Vehicle Pileup on Interstate 24 in McCracken County, Kentucky (KY)

August 19, 2020

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY- writes that a collision took place in McCracken County this week that involved six vehicles. The incident led to serious injuries for a man from North Carolina.*

Reports state that the wreck occurred in the early afternoon when a semi-truck traveling eastbound in the right lane tried to slow in congested traffic on the Interstate 24 bridge. The 44-year-old truck tried to switch lanes as he was attempting to lower the speed of his large vehicle.

When the driver realized he could not stop in time, he veered to the left. In doing so, the truck collided with a car. Two people were in that vehicle, which was from North Carolina, and a car from Illinois. Those two vehicles became stuck beneath another automobile, which was from Idaho. The truck continued moving and collided with a car from Kentucky, and then a vehicle from Missouri.

The injured victim was a man from North Carolina. In the car that the victim was traveling were a 59-year-old man, a 63-year-old man, and another 59-year-old man. It is not clear which one was hospitalized following the collision.

The road was reportedly shut down for an hour and a half following the collision.

Semi-trucks cause many crashes on the road, and accidents involving these massive vehicles lead to thousands of fatalities every year. The victims are often those traveling in passenger vehicles who are forced to share the road with these large trucks.

One of the issues with these massive vehicles is that they cannot quickly come to a stop. The braking time and distance increase if the roads are slick from bad weather, or if the truck has not been well-maintained. Faulty brakes are a leading problem with trucks.
