Alcohol Consumption is One of the Top Causes of Preventable Fatalities

August 20, 2020

USA- Alcohol consumption is one of the top causes of preventable fatalities in the United States. In fact, it is the third most likely cause of preventable death, leading to about 72,558 fatalities in the matter of one year. Many of these deaths are the result of drunk drivers.*

Heavy drinking and binge drinking are both problems. Heavy drinking for a man consists of consumes fifteen or more alcoholic beverages a week, which averages to over two drinks a day. For women, the number is smaller, with eight drinks per week.

Binge drinking is different and is defined by drinking enough to reach a blood-alcohol level of .08 percent or higher. In order to reach such a level, the average man would have to consume around five drinks in a two-hour period, and a woman would have to consume around four.

Drunk drivers are one alcohol-related issue and lead to around 30 percent of fatal wrecks. Of course, alcohol is a problem beyond driving, and the regular consumption of alcohol leads to a variety of health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, and some forms of cancer. Overdoses and liver disease lead to about 50 percent of all alcohol-related fatalities.

Heavy drinking appears to be most problematic in the Midwest. Wisconsin is home to nine out of ten of the cities with the highest rates of excessive alcohol consumption.

When it comes to drunk driving-related fatalities, the worst states are Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, and South Carolina. New York, Utah, D.C., New Jersey, and Massachusetts are at the other end of the list with the fewest drunk driving fatalities.

Drunk drivers kill about 10,000 people every year nationally.
