Locations Where Americans Do the Most Driving

August 18, 2020

USA- The average American driver covers more miles in the United States than motorists in any other country. According to data, American men drive, on average, 16,500 miles per year. Women drive fewer miles, with an average of 10,100 miles annually. In Canada, drivers average at 9,600 miles per year, while Australians travel around 8,600 miles annually.*

Americans' love for driving leads to millions of wrecks every year and kills 90 people each day. Environmentally, the miles take a toll as well. Many people have been promoting a healthier lifestyle that would not be as dependent on vehicle transportation. Cutting down on mileage would be harder on people in some states than for others.

In Wyoming, drivers cover more miles on average than in any other state in the nation. Per capita, residents of the state travel an average of 18,067 miles each year. There is no passenger train system in Wyoming, and buses only hit major destinations in the state. As a result, driving is necessary to get around.

The second state with the most miles travelled on the list is Alabama, where the average miles per driver travelled are 14,560 per year. Sadly, the death rate for motorists in the state is one of the highest in the country, and drunk driving, speeding, and other driving infractions are a serious safety risk for residents. Mississippi, New Mexico, and North Dakota round out the top five states where people drive the most.

New York falls on the other end of the spectrum in 50th place. Drivers in the state travel an average of just 6,320 miles each year- which is just over one-third of the miles traveled by motorists in Wyoming.
