Georgia State Patrol States Local Auto Accidents Are on the Rise

August 12, 2020

According to an article published on Times-Herald.com, Georgia State Patrol officials announced the number of motor vehicle accidents in Newnan, Georgia doubled in June 2020.

Georgia State Patrol Troopers (Post 24) investigated 46 motor vehicle accidents in Newnan, Georgia, in June 2020. According to Sergeant First Class Mike Searcy, June’s automobile accidents led to 12 people sustaining personal injuries, and there were two fatalities. The Georgia State Patrol troopers on Post 24 reported that they only investigated only 21 motor vehicle accidents in May 2020.

In June, Georgia State Patrol troopers issued 368 traffic tickets and conducted 498 traffic stops. The aforementioned total traffic stops led to three driving under the influence arrests, 256 speeding tickets, 16 child seat violations, and 12 seatbelt violations. The Georgia State Patrol troopers wrote 73 warnings for other driving violations.

Sergeant First Class Mike Searcy asks Georgia drivers to use more caution as they operate their motor vehicles and avoid all forms of distracted driving. Driving while distracted by mobile devices was responsible for 22 percent of all motor vehicle collisions. Distracted driving is responsible for 16 percent of fatal accidents.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving is one of the most dangerous behaviors resulting in 2,841 tragic fatalities in 2018.  The NHTSA reports that those people killed in those accidents were: 1,730 drivers, 605 passengers, 400 pedestrians and 77 bicyclists.
