The Rate of Hit-and-Run Deaths Rise 60 Percent Nationally in the Past Few Years
USA- Hit-and-runs are on the rise nationally after jumping 60 percent in a matter of a few years. The numbers come from the AAA’s study on hit-and-runs, which looked at data through 2016. The vast majority of those killed in such crashes are pedestrians and cyclists who are less protected on the road.*
The reason that these individuals are more likely to be victims of hit-and-run collisions is that they are less likely to cause severe or disabling damage to the driver’s car. A motorist can strike a person and still flee the scene in their vehicle and hope to escape justice. In a deadly crash involving two or more cars or larger vehicles, the severe damage makes the idea of fleeing more of a challenge.
Sadly, in about one out of every five pedestrian crashes, the driver who struck the person leaves the scene of the crash. The percentage of fatal pedestrian crashes that involve a fleeing motorist has remained steady for the past ten years. Meanwhile, only one percent of all drivers dies in a crash with a fleeing motorist.
The study also looked at which states were the worst for hit-and-run fatalities. The states that had the most hit-and-run fatalities per capita was New Mexico. Louisiana, Florida, Arizona, and Nevada also all had high levels of hit-and-runs. On the high end, states fell between .77 and .85 fatalities for every 100,000 residents. The states with the fewest fatal hit-and-runs included New Hampshire, Maine, and Minnesota. Those states fell between .12 and .19 deaths per 100,000.
It is not clear why hit-and-run deaths are trending the wrong way throughout the nation.
