America’s Safest Cities To Drive

July 27, 2020

USA- There are many factors that lead to a city being more or less dangerous for drivers. With more than 36,000 fatalities on the roads in 2018, there are deadly risks on the road.  Most of these incidents are preventable tragedies that result from irresponsible and dangerous drivers. Drunk driving, distracted motorists, and other common hazardous driving behaviors are to blame for about 94 percent of all collisions.

The rankings were created by an insurance company based on the population of each city. The number one safest driving city was Boise, Idaho, followed by Brownsville, Texas, and Laredo, Texas. Cary, North Carolina, came in ninth place, in spite of the state having a relatively poor record for driving safety based on other studies. Interestingly, Miami, Florida, snagged the tenth spot on the list. Florida is often criticized for its poor traffic safety and ranks as the worst of states in terms of pedestrian deaths, cyclist fatalities, and hit-and-run crashes. Huntsville, Alabama came in fourteenth place on the list as well.

While a few southeastern cities may have made their way onto the list of safest places to drive, overall, in 2019, the southeast was more dangerous than the rest of the nation.

Although fatal crashes dropped by 1.2 percent nationally and declined in nine out of ten regions, the southeast increased in fatalities by two percent.

States included in the southeast region including South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drivers can reduce their own risks on the road by taking basic precautions. Avoid traveling over the speed limit, always use a seatbelt, never drive drunk, and avoid distractions while operating a vehicle.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
