Georgia Law Enforcement is Cracking Down on Speeding Motorists in "Operation Southern Shield"
GEORGIA- Bryancountynews.com writes that Georgia police officers are working to catch motorists who are violating the state's speed limits. The "Operation Southern Shield" comes as drivers have been taking to the road at higher than normal speeds. The COVID-19 pandemic left many roadways with lighter than normal traffic, and some drivers viewed the open roads as an invitation to hit speeds that would not normally be possible. Police are now addressing the problem and working to catch those drivers who are making the roads more dangerous for everyone.*
Southern Shield is not a new program, and over the past few years, research indicates that the efforts to deter drivers from speeding have led to lives saved.
In 2018, about twenty percent of crash deaths involved speeding drivers. Nationally, speeding is a factor in close to one-third of all fatal collisions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 9,718 people lost their lives in crashes in which speeding was a factor in 2018 alone.
Not only will officers be out on the road this month looking for speed violations, but they will be monitoring for other dangerous driving as well. Distracted and drunk drivers will be on police officers' radar. Law enforcement departments are hoping that the enforcement will remind motorists to use caution when on the road, and not to engage in behaviors that will put themselves and others at risk.
