Dynamic Speed Monitors Reduce Accident Risks in Express Lane in Virginia
RICHMOND, VA — Virginia State Police installed dynamic speed monitors in the E-Z Pass express lanes of Interstates 95 and 495. The dynamic speed monitors dramatically decrease speeds when in use. The dynamic speed signs display the speed of a passing vehicle. These signs serve as a reminder to the motorist to travel at the speed limit as posted. According to a report appearing in the Potomac Local, the speed limit will be posted adjacent to the dynamic speed reading. Officials have been impressed by the results. Virginia State Police troopers assigned to patrol the E-Z Pass lanes where the dynamic signs are used issued fewer citations for speeding and reckless driving in April 2020 as compared to April of 2019.
Between April of 2019 April 2020, troopers with the Virginia state police controlling E-Z Pass lanes issued 1079 speeding tickets and 994 reckless driving citations. In April of 2019 alone, troopers press charges against 71 express lanes motorists for reckless driving and cited 73 people for speeding. After the dynamic speed signs were installed in April 2020, troopers issued only 44 tickets for reckless driving and four citations for speeding.
Virginia is not the only jurisdiction in which speeding motorists have endangered others. Fatal crashes have increased in locations such as Minnesota and Massachusetts. Meanwhile, the State of New York has issued nearly 25,000 speeding tickets, in turn, one month, which was a 50% increase from the previous month. Los Angeles also reports that speeds have increased by 30% on certain roads in the area.
