Crashes Kill Thirteen in Georgia over Fourth of July Weekend
GEORGIA- Ajc.com writes that car crashes killed thirteen people this year in Georgia over the holiday weekend. The state saw a total of twelve deadly crashes during the holiday travel period between Friday evening and Sunday night.*
The numbers dropped by half as compared to last year when 26 people died in the same time period. In addition to deadly wrecks, 180 crashes were reported, and 96 people were injured in the state in traffic incidents.
Police also indicate that officers made 322 drunk driving arrests over the weekend of the fourth. Last year there were 422 DUI arrests.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) writes that the Fourth of July always sees an uptick in drunk driving crashes. From 2014 through 2018, deadly collisions over the holiday period killed 812 people. The holiday is one of the most dangerous of the year in terms of drunk drivers.
The NHTSA states that drivers need to realize that even before they reach the legal limit, alcohol impairs their driving abilities. At just .02 percent, a person may experience a decline in their ability to safely operate a car. Drugs also take a toll on road safety. The NHTSA runs a campaign titled If You Feel Different, You Drive Different, which focuses on reminding drivers that operating a car after using drugs is also a crime and puts all road users at risk.
When it comes to responsible celebrations, the NHTSA says that people who have had even one drink should not get behind the wheel. If a friend is about to get behind the wheel after drinking, take their keys, and help them find an alternate way to get home.
