Interstate 10 One of Deadliest Roads in the USA

July 02, 2020

USA - Interstate 10 is one of the nation's deadliest roadways, according to CLICK2HOUSTON.COM. I-10 runs through New Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana. TX-105 also made the list of dangerous roadways, and ranked as the fourth worst road for drunk driving wrecks, and experienced the longest wait times for emergency services.*

The stretch of I-10 that passes through Harris County was found to be the fifth most dangerous highway in the country based on seven-years' worth of data. The same data indicated that Interstate 20's stretch near Dallas is the sixth deadliest roadway in the nation.

Texas was home to five out of six worst roads for drunk driving-related collisions.

Drunk driving remains a problem nationally. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety writes that from the early 1980s through the 1990s, the number of drunk driver-related incidents declined significantly. After that point, the numbers failed to drop further. In fact, studies found that 7,082 fewer traffic fatalities would have taken place in 2010 if drivers had not entered the roadway while drunk. By 2018, the IIHS states that 7,144 people would not have been killed had drivers with BACs of .08 or higher stayed off the roads.

Studies indicate that there is an increase in the risk of being involved in a crash when a person's BAC is at or above .05 percent. The risk rises more drastically at .08 percent. All states also have "zero tolerance" laws in effect for drivers under 21 years of age.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
