Ways to Reduce Crashes

June 29, 2020

USA - According to the cdc.gov, the risk of being tragically killed in a car crash is high in the United States. In fact, up to the age of 30, car accidents are the number one cause of death for Americans. Each year, tens of thousands of people are killed in vehicle collisions.

Car crashes are a drain on the national economically as well, and each year a sum of 44 billion dollars is lost on missed work and car crash-related medical care.

One of the ways to reduce some of the devastating impacts of car crashes is to pass primary enforcement seatbelt laws. These laws are able to reduce crash fatalities and costs over the short-term. Other legal avenues to cut down on crashes include the use of ignition interlock devices for individuals convicted of drunk driving.

Crashes are also the number one cause of work-related deaths in the country. Work-related crashes are an issue for the trucking industry, specifically. Increasing seatbelt use for truck drivers, and preventing truckers from driving while drowsy are ways to limit the likelihood of these accidents. One survey found that 37 percent of drivers admitted to violating the hours-of-service rules, and 38 percent of drivers felt that the entry-level training was not adequate for their job.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) writes that crash deaths dropped in 2018. The NHTSA reports that crash-related fatalities have been mainly on the decline over the years thanks to improvements in vehicle safety.
