Georgia Department of Transportation Reminds Drivers to Stay Alert
GEORGIA- The Drive Alert Arrive Alive initiative is working to remind motorists about how important it is to drive carefully in order to arrive safely. Most crashes are the result of driver mistakes, including driving while distracted.*
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) reports that more than three in four fatal crashes are the result of unsafe driving practices. Other than distracted driving, some of the common mistakes motorists make include speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
In 2019, car crashes killed 1,507 people in Georgia. Out of all the individuals killed in the state last year, 60 percent were not using restraints.
It is not only people in cars that suffer from unsafe drivers or unsafe driving practices. Last year, pedestrians accounted for sixteen percent of all crash deaths.
So many tragedies that occur on the road are completely preventable. Drivers can choose not to drive while distracted or drunk, and to follow the speed limit. Responsible driving can reduce the chances of being in a crash and will protect you and your loved ones from becoming a statistic.
GDOT urges all motorists to buckle up, put phones down, and to never drive drunk.
While traffic deaths dropped in Georgia in 2017 and 2018, they increased slightly in 2019. Officials are hoping that more motorists will follow the hands-free law, and stay off of electronic devices as distraction continues to be a road hazard in the state.
