Dalton Crashes Decline in Georgia (GA)

DALTON, GA- Timesenterprise.com writes that the police department in Dalton reports a decline in traffic accidents and criminal activity while more people have been home during the pandemic.*

From the new year through April, the number of collisions dropped 22 percent as compared to the same time frame last year. The number of people driving has dropped, leading to a decline. However, those numbers are expected to rise again as businesses begin to open.

Last year, there were 126 collisions in April in the area. This year, there were just 59. Those numbers are a direct result of the sharp decline in vehicles on the road.

The last normal month for Dalton was February, and that month had numbers that were in line with what the police expect. Following the temporary dip, officers anticipate both crashes and crime to increase to normal levels.

Last year, 1,507 people were killed in car crashes in Georgia. Those numbers show a very small increase over the 1,504 people killed in 2018. However, after two years of declining numbers, the small increase is a disappointing sign for safety on the state’s roads. While some in the state hoped that the hands-free law was going to help keep numbers low, the number of tragic and preventable deaths is still over 1,500.

According to official numbers, 60 percent of those killed were not using their seatbelts. Drivers should always buckle up and should ensure that the passengers in their car are also using their seatbelts. Other ways to reduce the risk of a crash are to put away phones and distractions when getting into the car. Of course, never get behind the wheel after consuming drugs or alcohol.
