Atlanta Traffic Lights To Get High Tech Upgrade

July 16, 2020

ATLANTA, GA- The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is working to implement new advanced technology into the city's infrastructure, according to VALDOSTATODAY.COM. The systems will be capable of helping drivers know whether they have the time to make it through a green light, or if they ought to stop. The systems will also be providing motorists with warnings when they are heading towards a red light, or if there are pedestrians in the roadway ahead.*

Georgia is not only using technology to make Atlanta's roads safer, but the features are also designed to help improve traffic flow through the city. Smart traffic signals, which are already a reality in parts of the city, will also become vital parts of the infrastructure when self-driving cars begin to hit the road.

Software used to detect traffic crashes and other incidents is also being used to scan the roads and identify problems that could be leading to delays. If the program identifies a problem, it can then deploy officers to the scene to assist.

The system has proven capable of lowering the amount of time responders take to get to the scene. The average response time has dropped by about six to seven minutes, which means that traffic patterns are able to more quickly return to normal, and delays are reduced.

Officials in Georgia want to keep pushing the use of modern technology for traffic solutions. The state is looking to establish itself as a leader in the area of traffic innovation.
