Georgia Debates Fines for Distracted Driving Violations

June 02, 2020

GEORGIA- Police in Georgia have been issuing tickets to distracted drivers since the state's law went into effect in 2018, according to AJC.COM. Since the law was initiated, the state has seen a decline in traffic fatalities.*

However, many motorists are still failing to put their phones down when they are operating their cars. The state is now trying again to get individuals to make the right decision and to stop looking at their phones while driving. The proposed law would double the fine for a violation.

The maximum fine for a first-time offense is $50, but under the new law if approved, the penalty would jump to $100. In the case of a second offense, a $200 fine would be instituted, and $300 penalties would be applied in the case of a third-time violation. In the event a driver is caught on the phone while in a construction or school zone, the resulting fine would be doubled.

According to safety advocates, such an increase is necessary because drivers are failing to abide by the law and continuing to put themselves and others on the road at risk. Efforts to stop people from looking at phones while driving is challenging because it requires people to change their behaviors. The goal is to reach a point where these tickets are not being issued.

Distracted driving may not have started with phones, but this technology certainly has made things worse. These devices are designed to attract our attention leading to many more instances of distraction than eating or changing a radio station.

Some oppose the law because they say that while the fine may not be too burdensome for some, there are others who will struggle to pay and face a disproportionate consequence.
