Georgia Loses Fifteen People in Tragic Memorial Day Wrecks

May 30, 2020

ATLANTA, GA- Wsbtv.com writes that over the Memorial Day Weekend, fifteen people were tragically killed in car crashes. There were a total of thirteen deadly accidents on the state’s roads over the holiday.*

The state kept track of fatalities between Friday evening and Monday night in order to track the busiest travel times of the holiday weekend. In total, 317 collisions were reported, and 188 individuals sustained injuries.

The state also made 317 drunk driving arrests over the weekend and issued one citation for a violation of social distancing in Atlanta.

In 2018, the state saw fewer overall traffic fatalities as compared to the previous year. Officials noted that the drop was likely in part because the state banned the use of handheld electronics while driving. The numbers dropped from 1,540 in 2017 to 1,504 in 2018 and marked two years of declining deaths.

Unfortunately, 2019 did not continue the downward trend. Last year, 1,507 people were tragically killed in traffic accidents in the state. Of those killed, 60 percent had failed to use their seatbelts. Unsafe driving behaviors were the main causes of these crashes. Distractions, drunk or drugged driving, and speeding still plague the roads and can potentially lead to tragic results.

Pedestrian deaths also continue to plague the state and account for about sixteen percent of all of the traffic fatalities in Georgia. The Georgia Department of Transportation reminds everyone of the importance of buckling up, getting off of their phones, and only driving when sober and alert.
