Georgia Motorists Asked to Respect Motorcyclists and to Share the Road

May 30, 2020

GEORGIA- Georgia Department of Driver Services is reminding drivers in the state that May is Motorcycle Awareness Month, according to VALDOSTATODAY.COM.

Sadly, thousands of motorcyclists are killed every year in traffic accidents. These road users are more likely to lose their lives in motorcycle crashes than are people in cars or other passenger vehicles. In fact, the risk of death to motorcyclists is about 27 times as high as it is for people in cars.

Driver attention is needed to keep motorcyclists and others safe. When a driver loses focus for even a moment, the result can be deadly for motorcyclists.

The smaller size of motorcycles makes it easier for drivers to overlook these vehicles. The campaign is intended to make motorists remember that they have to be on the lookout for all types of vehicles when they are driving.

The number of motorcycle deaths rose in 2019 in Georgia. In total, 163 motorcyclists tragically died in the state last year, indicating a rise of about eight percent as compared to 2018.

Motorcyclists are also reminded to take their own safety seriously and to use a helmet and other safety gear. Safety experts say that equipment such as helmets can save lives the same way that using a seatbelt saves lives.

While motorcyclists are encouraged to take their own safety seriously, these road users cannot be safe unless the people operating the larger vehicles around them are paying attention. Although motorcycles might be small, they have the same rights to the road as people in cars and larger vehicles.
