Teen Drivers at Risk During the 100 Deadliest Days
TAMPA, FL- Wkrg.com writes that as we head into summer, teen drivers are entering the most dangerous time of the year to be on the road. The AAA states that 30 percent of fatalities involving teenagers take place during the time period between Memorial Day and Labor Day. With teens out of school, they have more time to be out on the road, which increases the risk of them being involved in a collision.*
Statistics indicate that mile per mile, teenagers face a risk of being in a crash that is about three times that of an older and more experienced driver. According to AAA, parents need to be monitoring teenage drivers and modeling good driving behavior to help young motorists learn safe habits.
In Florida alone, 42 people on average are killed each year in crashes involving teenage motorists.
A survey of teenage drivers conducted in 2019 found that 72 percent of teenage drivers had engaged in one of a number of risky driving behaviors within the past 30 days. The behaviors listed included driving ten miles per hour above a speed limit on a residential roadway or fifteen miles per hour above a posted speed limit on a freeway, texting and driving, running red lights, driving aggressively, driving while drowsy, and failing to use a seatbelt.
The AAA says that parents should be having conversations with their teenage drivers about dangers associated with speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving. Parents can also lead by example by practicing safe driving. Setting rules and signing a parent-teen driving agreement can also make your teen understand what is expected of them. Teens should also have a minimum of 50 hours of supervised driving practice.
