Self-Driving Truck Company Closes Down
USA- Jalopnik.com writes that self-driving trucks are getting a lot of attention as these vehicles hit the road, already transporting goods. Starsky Robotics had some impressive milestones, including being the first company to have an autonomous truck operate on a public road. However, the company is now closing its doors.
According to a representative for the trucking company, their focus on safety impeded their progress in the market and hurt their chances of getting investors. The spokesperson stated that other companies were working to make their vehicles capable of completing lane changes, but that Starsky was working on engineering safety features. The work led to the company being the first in the business to complete a Voluntary Safety Self-Assessment with the United States Department of Transportation.
Another issue is that many investors are learning that the technology might not be as close to completion as many hoped and that their investments are not yielding results quickly enough. While money has been pouring into the industry, the results still prove elusive.
One of the issues with the technology is that the trucks will need to respond to some rare occurrences, including uncommon weather, animals darting into the road, and many other unexpected events. As the list of possible encounters grows, developing the technology to account for those incidents becomes more challenging and more costly.
According to some, achieving an autonomous truck that is as competent as a person will require billions in funding, and several years of tests. Some believe that technology is not going to match the expectations of the industry- at least not for years to come. Perhaps the estimates are not correct, but for the time being, some believe that self-driving technology remains out of reach.
