Construction-Related Closures Suspended for Holiday Weekend in Georgia

May 20, 2020

GEORGIA- Traffic congestion over the holiday weekend will likely be somewhat alleviated in Georgia thanks to the suspension of construction-related closures, according to ALLONGEORGIA.COM. The roads that are expected to be heavily trafficked over the weekend because of tourism will have limited construction-related lane closures starting on Friday and extending through early Tuesday morning.*

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) stated that there is an expectation of heavy traffic locally, while families choose to take trips closer to their homes as a result of coronavirus-related travel restrictions. The state anticipates much higher volumes of traffic than what has been seen in recent weeks.

Georgia’s welcome centers remain closed because of the pandemic, but the restrooms are open and will be deep cleaned regularly throughout the day. Some facilities may be closed at certain points throughout the day while crews work to sanitize those locations. Officials asked that anyone using such public spaces practice social distancing guidelines and guidelines set by public health agencies.

In the event of a collision, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) states that motorists should not exit their cars on the freeway unless staying in the car places than in imminent danger. The best action to take when possible is to pull off of the roadway and turn on the vehicle’s hazard lights. Occupants should remain seated with their seatbelts fastened and doors locked until they are able to get roadside assistance.

The state reminds travelers that dialing 511 will connect them to a free service that can be used to report traffic incidents and road debris as well as gain real-time traffic information, including accidents, delays and lane closures.
