Rumble Strips Added on Georgia Roads For Driver Safety

May 20, 2020

PUTNAM COUNTY, GA- 41nbc.com writes that more than 50 percent of deadly collisions occur because of a driver who veers across the center line in the road. The Georgia Department of Transportation is now trying to improve safety for drivers in the state by installing rumble strips on roadways throughout eight different counties.*

Rumble strips cause vibrations in a car, which therefore alert motorists when they are drifting out of their lanes. These road features are raised bumps that are installed on the pavement.

A spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Transportation stated that installing the rumble strips will cost the state more than two million dollars.

The reason people cross into oncoming traffic is often that the drivers are distracted and possibly looking at their phones instead of the road. Other times, drivers may begin to veer out of their lane due to fatigue. One woman stated that she fell asleep while driving on a rural two-lane road, and the experience terrified her, waking her up and saving her life, after driving over the rumble strips. A resident from Heartwood said that she witnessed a deadly collision on a road that lacked rumble strips. In that incident, the driver veered across the roadway and killed the motorist who was traveling in the correct direction.

The project is a fairly new one for the state, and officials plan to install the features where that are needed most.

GDOT estimates that the project will require about two months to finish.

Traffic deaths in Georgia declined for two years straight, according to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety in Georgia. In 2018, 1504 people died in traffic crashes on Georgia’s roads. Still, far too many people are dying from vehicle or truck incidents in the state, highlighting the need for additional safety measures.
