Atlanta Considers Making A Street Racing Area to Prevent Reckless Driving on Public Roads
ATLANTA, GA- Thedrive.com writes that the emptier roads are alluring to motorists who have a need for speed. The number of tickets issued to motorists traveling in triple-digit speeds has sharply increased across the nation during the coronavirus outbreak.*
Reports of hazardous driving have become so common in Atlanta that the city is now considering whether it should have a designated space where dangerous driving maneuvers are permitted. By allowing drivers to take risks in one area, some hope to prevent such incidents from taking place around bystanders.
According to the mayor, the idea was proposed by her teenage son, but now she is seriously looking into whether it might provide some relief from the dangerous drivers. The city is also working with a consulting group to help find ways to make the roads safer.
Atlanta is not the first city to consider such a move, even prior to the spike in reckless driving. The city of Detroit had proposed such a plan in early March.
While some believe that the plan could help keep burnouts and donuts from occurring on the road with commuters and bystanders, there is plenty of opposition to the proposal, too.
Some fear that allowing the dangerous driving in one area will do little to prevent it from occurring anywhere else. Harsher penalties for driving-related violations such as street racing may also come as a result to the rise in risk-taking motorists.
