NTSB Provides Details Regarding School Bus Accident That Killed Three Siblings in 2018
USA- Stnonline.com writes that the National Transportation Safety Board issued a statement regarding their investigation into a school bus incident that took place in Rochester, Indiana, in 2018. Students were at the bus stop located outside of a mobile home park in the early morning when the school bus arrived on the scene. The driver of the bus activated its stop sign arm and its flashing lights but then motioned to the students in an effort to tell them not to cross the road. A car was approaching fast on the 55-mile-an-hour roadway.*
The bus driver then honked in an attempt to alert the oncoming motorist. Ten children were at the stop, and several began to cross the road. Three were killed, including a nine-year-old girl and her twin stepbrothers who were six at the time. An eleven-year-old boy sustained severe injuries and required twenty surgical procedures as part of his recovery.
According to the report, the reason for the collision was, in part, the motorist’s failure to stop for the bus as required by law. However, the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation was also found in part at fault for not adequately assessing the school bus routes to determine whether they afforded safe access to the buses, and for failing to establish a way to signal to children when crossing the road.
The driver who struck the victims was operating a pickup truck and had passed multiple signs alerting her of the presence of a school bus stop. The weather was clear, and the road was straight, eliminating those potential factors from the crash.
The NTSB provided twelve recommendations to the school district for ways to improve safety.
