Georgia Ranks Fourteenth in Deadly Crashes in Atlanta, Georgia (GA)

April 21, 2020

ATLANTA, GA- Patch.com writes that deadly car crashes in Georgia occur more often than the national average. A study ranked Georgia as fourteenth in the country when it comes to car accident fatalities.*

Georgia has just over fifteen car crash fatalities for every 100,000 people in the state. In 2016, there were 1,554 overall fatalities, which was the fourth-most in the country at the time.

The states with the poorest records tend to be those in the southeast. The authors of the study stated that car accidents deaths tragically kill more people 54 years old and younger than any other cause. The states that have the highest numbers of deaths tend to be those with more rural roadways. Rural areas often have higher speed limits and tend to have utility poles and trees along their sides. Within the ten deadliest states for car crashes, each state had more rural roadways than the average for the nation.

Seatbelt laws also play a role in whether a state is more dangerous for road users. States with primary seatbelt laws tend to have a higher rate of people buckling up. In states with primary seatbelt law enforcement, officers are able to pull a driver over when they notice that they are not buckled up. In states with secondary enforcement, police can only cite a driver for a seatbelt violation after pulling them over for something unrelated to a seatbelt violation, such as a speeding violation. The study indicated that around 242 people killed in 2016 likely would have lived if every state had a primary seatbelt enforcement law.
