COVID-19 Clears the Road for Speeding Motorists on GA-400
SANDY SPRINGS, GA - Cbs46.com writes that police and other officials in Sandy Springs are reporting that GA-400 looks like a race-track with speeding motorists taking advantage of the nearly empty highway.*
Over the last three weeks, officers report ticketing more than 52 drivers for traveling over 100 miles per hour. One officer said that there has been a noticeable increase in drivers greatly exceeding the speed limit on GA-4000 and 285. While GA-400 has a reputation for speeding motorists, the issue has been more severe during the pandemic.
The lighter traffic is making these high speeds possible where the traffic would have prevented much of this dangerous behavior before the current pandemic.
In Alpharetta police report issuing citations to three motorists for traveling at more than 100 miles per hour within just 60 minutes time. While drivers at these high speeds are typically arrested, the current practice is to ticket them and give them a future court date. Police are shying away from such arrests as a precaution because of COVID-19, but the consequences will still follow.
Police stated that these speeding drivers are taking to the road during the day and night and that they are creating serious risks. Officers are trying to prevent this behavior in an effort to keep people safe.
So far, police say that they have been on the scene of more than 300 collisions over the past 30 days. Officers stated that these wrecks should not be happening because so few cars are on the street.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 9,378 people were killed in speeding-related collisions in 2018. About one-third of fatal traffic crashes are the result of speeding motorists.
