Tesla 3 Autopilot Update May Include Ability to Stop for Red Lights
USA- Insideevs.com writes that an upgraded version of driverless software in a Tesla Model 3 now allows the updated vehicles to respond to red traffic signals and stop the vehicles automatically. It is not clear if or when the feature will be appearing in Teslas.*
Reports indicate that vehicles with the update also are able to react to stop signs. The software also lets drivers know that it has noticed the light and is responding to let drivers have peace of mind that the car is acknowledging the traffic light.
Recent reports found that Tesla’s Autopilot feature was at least partially at fault in a 2018 crash that killed a 38-year-old driver. According to the investigation, the car accelerated as it approached and ultimately collided with a concrete barrier.
The report also stated that the driver had been playing a game on his phone. However, the crash avoidance system was not able to identify or detect the barrier and did not adequately monitor the driver’s engagement. While the system is able to adjust the car’s speed and even change lanes, it is only semi-autonomous, and drivers are still supposed to pay attention to the road while using the system.
Some criticize the company for calling the feature “Autopilot” and say that it suggests that the cars are capable of operating autonomously when they are actually not. The National Transportation Safety Board said more crashes were foreseeable if Tesla did not implement changes to its Autopilot system.
