People Make Mistakes, and These Mistakes are Causing Deadly Car Crashes
USA- Npr.org writes that car crashes are killing tens of thousands of people every year. While vehicle manufacturers continue to make cars safer for drivers and occupants, the number of fatalities remains high.*
Newer cars are often equipped with blind-spot detection, lane departure warnings, antilock brakes, and vehicle stabilizers. Still, in 2019, an estimated 38,800 people died in vehicle collisions.
The troubling crash fatality numbers are often the result of human errors. In one example, a police officer discussed a violent collision that tragically killed a 22-year-old woman. The victim was rear-ended by a Ford Mustang. The 23-year-old driving the Mustang was speeding, drunk, and under the influence of marijuana when he killed the young women. The officer explains that all of the factors leading to the crash were preventable.
Statistically, 94 percent of fatal crashes are caused by human mistakes. Texting and driving, drinking and driving, and speeding are all examples of the irresponsible types of behaviors that cost lives.
While safer cars will protect against some of the dangerous human driver tendencies, new safety features cannot prevent the risks posed by all of the dangerous driving behaviors. Someday self-driving cars may be able to eliminate the need for responsible human motorists but that day has not yet arrived.
