Crash Highlights Importance of Move Over Law in Georgia
COBB COUNTY, GA- 11alive.com writes that a car crash in Cobb County is being used as an example to remind motorists of the importance of giving space to first responders at the scene of crashes. The law has been on the books for years, and yet many drivers still violate it and put the lives of others, including many first responders, at risk.*
The Cobb County police shared images of a mutilated police vehicle which a driver struck at the site of a traffic stop. The incident led to injuries, but fortunately, no one died in the collision.
Under Georgia’s move over law, drivers are required to change lanes to one that is farthest from emergency vehicles, when it is safe and possible for them to do so. In situations where it is not possible for the driver to move over, they are required to slow down and drive past the scene with caution.
Police officers are often working close to the flow of traffic. When stopping vehicles, or responding to the scene of an accident, these responders, along with other professionals, must work in hazardous conditions. It is the responsibility of every motorist on the road to give these people space and to use caution to avoid turning one incident into a secondary crash or additional tragedy.
