Students in Lee County Attend Driving Symposium on Distracted Driving Dangers
LEESBURG, GA- Walb.com writes that a Lee County man is working to inform young drivers about the risks of distracted driving. The man tragically lost his son in a car crash several years ago and wants to stress the reality of these horrific collisions.*
In the last seventeen years, seven students from Lee County High School lost their lives in car crashes.
The Governor's Office of Highway Safety and Lee County Public Safety are working to highlight the risks presented by cellphones and other distractions on the roadway. Officials say that there are many problems with young drivers being distracted by electronic devices and that these individuals put themselves and others on the road at risk. The other point that officials are stressing is the importance of using a seatbelt. Using a restraint can mean the difference between life and death in a car crash.
Safety advocates also stressed the hazards of impaired driving. The symposium shows students what happens in a rollover crash, and the importance of a seatbelt in these incidents. The rollover simulator helps students visualize the violent consequences of a rollover for unrestrained occupants.
As part of the hands-on display, students were able to go down a slide-like seat that demonstrates the importance of seatbelts in preventing injuries. One official stated that the students often treat driving as if it is a videogame. Except in real life, you might not get a second chance after a crash. Teen drivers are at a greater risk on the road than motorists with more experience. In addition to their greater risk of being involved in a collision, they have lower rates of seatbelt usage than other demographics.
