Connected Vehicles May Increase Road Safety

March 13, 2020

USA- Fortune.com writes that about 40,000 tragically people died in car crashes in 2018. The overwhelming majority of car crashes are caused by human errors. In fact, a 2015 report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that about 94 percent of collisions are caused by driver mistakes.*

Modern technology may help to reduce crashes significantly. In the near future, cars may become interconnected. Connected automobiles, referring to vehicles with on-board sensors and advanced software that can communicate with drivers, other vehicles, and even with the road infrastructure and the cloud, may drastically cut down on the number of traffic accidents, and increase the flow of traffic. According to one research firm, it is estimated that by 2023, connected vehicles will make up almost 70% of all passenger vehicle sales.

Connected vehicles use information gathered from their surroundings to communicate with one another. Sensors will be installed on utility poles, along the road, and on traffic lights and other locations. The vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology will then coordinate traffic and send practical information to drivers. Estimates from the NHTSA state that the tech will be capable of preventing about 80 percent of all multi-vehicle collisions that do not involve drunk or otherwise impaired motorists.

Emergency services will also be alerted at higher speeds when an incident occurs. By installing vehicles with updated information on traffic, the new technology will also prevent road congestion leading to better flows of traffic. Many manufacturers are already on board with the new tech. Combined government and private sector efforts will be needed to allow the technology to reach its full potential.
