Tow-Truck Driver Nearly Struck Says Move Over Law is Vital for Responder Safety

CHATTANOOGA, TN- Newschannel9.com writes that a tow truck driver was nearly struck by a vehicle while responding to a call to move a disabled vehicle on Highway 153. In Tennessee, drivers are required to slow down and give space to people working on the side of the road. The Move Over Law is meant to protect responders when they arrive on the scene of a crash.*

The driver said he was working, and a car very nearly struck him causing him to realize the threat that he faces while doing his job every day. The man stated that he always has to be on the lookout for motorists when responding to the need to move a car on the highway. He stated that he fears being struck while parked on the shoulder because he knows several people who have been injured this way. 

The driver stated that at the time of the incident, he was wearing a reflective vest, and the lights were illuminated on his truck. Still, the oncoming driver appeared not to notice him. 

In one case, the driver said a police vehicle nearly struck him. Police officers are not only supposed to enforce the Move Over Law, but they are also some of the people who are often in the risky situations that the law seeks to address. 

According to the tow truck operator, the issue is typically that the drivers are distracted. He said he wants to get home at night just like everyone else. The law exists to protect these responders who work at the scene of emergencies. The man added that even if the vehicle is not an emergency responder, it is best to proceed with caution as someone might be in the disabled car.
