Driverless Cars Fooled by Holograms

February 27, 2020

USA- Inverse.com writes that a research team in Israel found a way to fool driverless vehicles using holograms. Driverless cars are being tested on many roads throughout the United States. These vehicles will likely be making their way into the mainstream market, and those who develop them are often pointing out how many lives will be saved by switching out human drivers for computers.*

Of course, human motorists cause tens of thousands of car crash fatalities every year, leaving much to be desired when it comes to safe driving. However, many people fear that autonomous vehicles will come with their own risks. One of the issues frequently brought up is that the cars might be hackable, allowing a person in a remote location to take control of the vehicles and cause chaos.

As it turns out, those who wish to fool driverless cars may not need to be sophisticated hackers. A video showed that by using holograms, researchers could get a car to stop. The so-called “phantom” projections can be seen in a somewhat spooky video. Not only could the holograms fool the cars into believing that people were on the road, but they could even trick the vehicles into seeing road signs that gave false information. Fake speed limits or street signs could confuse the computer systems.

The researchers say that these issues are not currently being considered by the manufacturers. While the designers are concerned with coding mistakes and bugs in the software, they are failing to consider the fact that the sensors cannot tell real objects from fake ones. A similar study took place in 2016 in South Carolina when researchers fooled Tesla’s autopilot system.
