Lawmakers Looking to Expand Georgia Seatbelt Law
ATLANTA, GA- Fox5atlanta.com writes that Georgia lawmakers are looking to expand the state’s seatbelt law. Currently, adult passengers riding in the back of a car are not required to use a seatbelt. A proposed law would make seatbelts required for all passengers inside of vehicles regardless of where they are sitting.*
The legislation would also raise the fines for people violating the seatbelt law. While the current law includes penalties of anywhere from $15 to $75, under the proposed law, the fines would start at $25 and go up to $125 for anyone driving with passengers over the age of eight who are not restrained. There is a separate law that addresses the failure to restrain children below the age of eight.
Legislators in support of the law say that the goal is to save lives. Lawmakers point out that many lives are lost each year in the state because of people who simply failed to buckle up.
Those who oppose the law say that the government should not be controlling a person's choice. One representative stated that he believes that people are responsible for themselves and that he would be fine with the law being struck. The bill is currently undergoing amendments and will be addressed again next week.
