Connected Vehicle Infrastructure Expanding in Georgia
GA - Allongeorgia.com writes that the state of Georgia is planning to make technological updates to its roads that until only recently would have seemed like science fiction. Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and connected vehicles (CV) are expected to help improve road safety, help manage traffic patterns, and reduce roadway congestion. Manufacturers are already planning to add CV technology to some new cars, and the state is working to make sure that the road infrastructure is there to support and make use of this new technology.*
There are already 400 locations in Atlanta that have the technology in place, and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is now stating that another 1,000 locations will be receiving the technological upgrades. The current technology falls into two main categories, including short-range communications and communications called cellular vehicle-to-everything technology. Safety technology in cars is already being used to prevent crashes, but the next step will involve infrastructure being able to communicate with people’s cars. The systems will be used to help drivers avoid crashes.
Ford Motor Company plans to release CV technology in its cars starting in 2022. Georgia wants to be at the forefront of the new technology. The first phase of this project comes with a ten million dollar price tag. Federal sources are providing eight million, while the other two million will come from various local sources. Leaders in the state believe the improvements will make life better for the people of Georgia. State officials plan to continue their collaborative efforts with the private sector to ensure that the technology is available as soon as possible.
