Georgia Plans Truck Only Lanes on Interstate 75
ATLANTA, GA - Georgia is planning to implement truck-only lanes on Interstate 75 in a project slated to be completed by the year 2028, according to 11ALIVE.COM. Over the weekend, two people tragically died in a fiery crash on Interstate 85 that involved two cars and a tanker truck. The massive fire that broke out on the interstate afterward caused people to be evacuated from their vehicles and even closed down local businesses. In the wake of this horrible accident, there are renewed calls for separating vehicle traffic from truck traffic on Georgia roads.*
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is working to develop new lanes for trucks only, a project slated to begin by 2024. The truck only lanes will be on Interstate 75 between McDonough and Macon and will be the first such dedicated truck lanes in the country. The area selected to implement the new lanes is one that is heavily trafficked by commercial trucks. By 2040, the traffic is anticipated to double. The truck only lanes will not have access to certain exits and they will not have tolls. GDOT is still deciding where the truck lanes will be accessible and where they will end. The plans are expected to reduce travel times and traffic delays. With truck accidents increasing around the country increased safety for those sharing the road with trucks will be a welcomed development.
