NCDOT Planning to Address Pedestrian Safety on NC Roadway
CHARLOTTE, NC- Wcnc.com writes that since 2016, there have been eight fatal pedestrian crashes on Independence Boulevard and at least 26 other crashes. The heavily trafficked roadway has ten lanes, and yet, people still try to cross it on foot. A yearlong study on the road is set to be completed this spring and will be used to advise the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) on how to improve safety on the roadway.*
The North Carolina Department of Transportation stated that pedestrians should only be crossing the road at pedestrian bridges. The department is also aware that this does not always happen. The twelve-mile stretch is now known for being dangerous. The most recent collision involved a sixteen-year-old boy who was pushing his bike across the road last month.
The City of Charlotte and Town of Matthews are part of a study that will cost over $100,000 that will focus on evaluating the risks presented by the roadway to pedestrians. NCDOT will be looking for short-term and long-term safety improvements along the road. The research will hopefully indicate where the greatest risks are and help to determine the most effective ways to address those risks.
The agency is also asking locals who travel the area often to provide input as to what would help make the roadway safer. One woman said she recently saw a mother with a baby stroller trying to make it across the busy road and jumping across a safety barrier. A person who admitted to crossing Independence on a regular basis stated that the bridges are just less convenient than crossing the ten-lane roadway.
