Officials Increase Vision Zero Efforts in Montgomery County

February 06, 2020

ROCKVILLE, MD - Vision Zero goals for Montgomery County, Maryland include an end to traffic-related deaths by the year 2030, according to Mont.thesentinel.com. After an increased number of fatal crashes in the area, county officials are refocusing their efforts in order to meet their goals.*

Since the start of 2020, the county has already lost three lives on its roads. Last year, thirteen people and one bicyclist tragically died in Montgomery County.  The program now has a full-time coordinator who will be working to meet the deadlines throughout the next decade. Officials say that the county has the resources to make a lot of positive changes. If another ten lives are lost in the remainder of the year, then the program will be seen as failing. The county intends to make it known that they are working on the issue and that traffic safety is a priority.

The new leader of the project has been working in public safety in the county for the last six years, three of which were on a part-time basis with the Vision Zero program. The program has been granted a $266 million dollar budget, with another $9.3 million dedicated solely to pedestrian safety efforts. At this point in time, the city has 26 bikeway and pedestrian projects planned, four pedestrian beacons, and sixteen bridge and roadway projects that will include sidewalks and bike paths.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
