Daylight Saving Time Linked to Increase in Car Crashes
USA- A study recently indicated that Daylight Saving Time causes an increase in automobile collisions, published on INSIDER.COM. According to researchers, the change in sleep patterns of just one hour can have serious consequences.*
The study points to the impact of the time change to person's sleep patterns, which can affect the body’s circadian rhythms and can cause people to feel sleep-deprived. It can take weeks for our bodies to fully recover from the shift.
The rate of auto accidents rise by about six percent in the week after clocks go forward. The study suggests that every year 28 fatalities caused by car accidents could be prevented by abolishing Daylight Savings Time.
The death toll of Daylight Savings Time goes beyond just an increase in automobile accidents. Studies indicate that right after the clocks are set an hour ahead in the spring, rates of strokes and heart attacks also increase.
A petition was sent to Congress with more than 300,000 signatures from people asking the government to put an end to the practice. While a national end to Daylight Savings Time has not been achieved, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam and Puerto Rico have abandoned the practice.
