Traffic Cameras Used to Catch Hit-and-Run Driver in Georgia

NEWNAN, GA- 11alive.com writes that a student from the University of Georgia was injured in a head-on crash over the weekend with a driver who then fled the scene. The driver who struck the student is now in custody after police were able to use traffic cameras to identify the vehicle.*

The cameras caught the suspect’s license plate, and officers located that vehicle at a body shop. Police were then able to apprehend the suspect. 

The victim spoke to reporters following the traumatic event. The student stated that she was on her way home from a friend’s house at night and stopped on Raymond Hill Road to wait for an opportunity to make a left turn. The other driver then swerved and struck her vehicle head-on. The victim’s airbags deployed, and the vehicle started to smoke. She then watched as the other driver began to back up and flee the scene. 

Witnesses stopped and helped the victim out of the street and waited with her for the authorities to arrive. 

Police stated that had it not been for the traffic cameras, which are located at several intersections in the area, they may never have found the suspect or the car, and the crash might have been one of many unsolved hit-and-runs. 

The victim says that she understands that the other driver was likely frightened after the crash, and that probably led to him fleeing the scene. Police say that the suspect was intoxicated when they arrested him and is now facing multiple charges related to the wreck.
