New Technology Coming to Traffic Controls in Metro Atlanta
ATLANTA, GA- Ajc.com writes that traffic signals in Atlanta are being technologically upgraded. The city currently has 400 “smart” signals helping to control the city traffic. Smart traffic signals are those that can communicate with cars and apps in order to increase efficient traffic patterns and keep drivers safer on the road. Now, Atlanta will be installing another 1,000 of these devices.*
Smart traffic signals are one of several new technologies that the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has included in an effort to improve traffic in the city. The city’s traffic is chaotic, but planners are looking to tech rather than just infrastructure improvements to solve some problems. Other features include crash detecting software. Officials hope to make Atlanta a center for traffic-related innovation.
While the city is using new high-tech solutions to improve its traffic, road construction will continue as well. The state has a plan to spend eleven billion dollars on projects to improve roadways across the state, including metro Atlanta. Data-sharing traffic lights are being installed in other locations in the state as well.
Technology that alerts the authorities of traffic accidents is being used to reduce response times. According to a spokesperson for GDOT, the software has already cut response time by around six minutes or more, meaning roads are cleared more quickly, and delays are shorter.
With about half of the traffic issues in the city resulting from accidents, a technology capable of reducing crashes and quickly clearing roads may greatly improve travel times and traffic patterns in the city.
