Bay Street Focus of Pedestrian Safety Improvements

January 17, 2020

SAVANNAH, GA - The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is placing HAWK signals at three locations all on Bay Street. The new devices will be in place by mid-January.*

HAWK is short for “high-intensity activated crosswalk,” and the devices are designed to improve pedestrian safety without impairing the flow of traffic. These devices are used in areas where there are many pedestrians. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), the devices can increase safety for those traveling on foot while minimizing delays to the flow of traffic.

GDOT explains that the devices look similar from a pedestrian’s point of view, but the display will be different for drivers. The department urged drivers to exercise extra caution until they are familiar with the new devices.

GDOT reminded the public that pedestrian safety depends on drivers’ willingness to follow the rules and practice safe driving.

Georgia saw a decline in fatalities in auto accidents last year. Officials believe the improvement is at least partially the result of the state’s new hands-free law, which prevents motorists from using hand-held electronics while driving. The benefits, unfortunately, did not translate to a lower number of pedestrian fatalities, and more pedestrians were tragically killed in 2018 than in the previous year.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
