Reducing Speed, Eliminating Distractions Key to Avoiding Serious Car Crashes
Reducing speed and eliminating distractions are key to avoiding serious car crashes, according to law enforcement officials in South Carolina. Officials also say that wearing a seat belt is still one of the easiest ways to keep yourself safe on the roads.
In the first half of 2019, a total of 420 people tragically died in traffic accidents on South Carolina highways, as reported by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. This figure was slightly down from the same time period in 2018, when 465 people died on state highways. Close to one-third of the people who died in highway traffic accidents during the first half of 2019 were not wearing seat belts.
While many factors contribute to every vehicle accident, law enforcement officers in South Carolina say that all motorists can take a few simple steps to reduce the odds of a crash and to decrease the likelihood of serious injuries. One of the first things officers recommend is slowing down. Drivers always need to pay attention to posted speed limits, and lowering your speed by even 5 mph can change the seriousness of any injuries that might occur from a crash.
Eliminating distractions is another way officers say drivers can avoid accidents. If your eyes are on your phone or your attention is diverted away from the road, you cannot see hazards and react in time to prevent a crash. Keep your phone out of your hands, and keep your focus on driving, officers say.
In addition, despite numerous developments in vehicle safety and technology, officials say a seat belt is still one of the best tools for avoiding injury in a vehicle crash. People wearing seat belts are less likely to sustain serious or fatal injuries in a car crash, compared to people not wearing seat belts.
