Autonomous Vehicle Makers Will Continue to Self-Regulate
USA- Nbcmiami.com writes that voluntary standards will continue to apply to autonomous vehicles despite safety advocates requesting regulations. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has also spoken out to recommend additional regulations for the growing industry.*
According to the NTSB, the recent guidelines presented by the Trump administration are favoring technological development over protecting lives. The Transportation Secretary stated that the new guidelines view safety as the top priority while still allowing the private sector to conduct research and development.
Some safety experts say that the ostensibly new guidelines are just the same voluntary standards that the industry has been operating under all along, and which have failed to hold companies accountable when their vehicles present safety risks to Americans on the road. The proposal is short on details, and some say that the companies are managing to carry out “science experiments” on the road with everyday motorists.
The NTSB wants the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to require corporations to submit reports detailing their safety efforts, which would include human safety drivers to be in vehicles and to be paying attention. As of now, such reports are voluntary, and only around one out of every five companies have filed one. Safety advocates say that it is unrealistic to think that corporations will be objective when evaluating their own policies and efforts and that the government should be involved in evaluating the protections in place with each manufacturer.
While the NHTSA states that it will consider the NTSB’s recommendations, the Administration previously stated that it does not wish to impede autonomous vehicle development with regulations because the technology will be capable of saving many lives.
