Autonomous, Driverless Vehicles Coming to Georgia

January 17, 2020

GEORGIA-  Driverless cars are coming to Georgia, according to GOVERNING.COM. A portion of the state’s Interstate 85 will be used to test autonomous vehicles. The relevant part of the interstate is named The Ray, and private companies such as 3M and Panasonic are now partnering with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) in a project that will bring “refractive bead technology” to the state.*

As the name suggests, the tech involves tiny reflective beads which are embedded into stripes on the roadway. These beads make the lines more obvious for human drivers but are also better for vehicles with advanced driving systems (ADS). The striping will help drivers see at night and in the rain, and aid autonomous vehicles in navigating the roads, as well.

The state’s data indicates that more deadly crashes take place during the night and in bad weather. The striping will, therefore, be helpful to drivers in these less than ideal driving circumstances and hopefully help to lower the number of fatal accidents that occur on Georgia roadways. While the current testing area is just eighteen miles of road, the goal is to expand to additional locations.

GDOT vehicles are being used to collect data regarding vehicle operations on The Ray. The systems being used are also being tested in Colorado and Utah. If the program is successful, the data will help safety and mobility efforts and will likely expand. For now, The Ray will be receiving the necessary infrastructure that will allow the state to add additional vehicles to its fleet.
