Drunk Driving Rates High in Rhode Island

January 13, 2020

RHODE ISLAND- Ricentral.com writes that Rhode Island’s rate of drunk driving is high compared to many other parts of the country, placing Rhode Island as one of the most dangerous states in the country to be on the roadway.  A recent study indicates that almost half of the vehicle fatalities in Rhode Island are due to impaired or intoxicated drivers.*

The study placed Rhode Island as third most dangerous state in the nation for drunk driving. Safe Smart Living conducted the research and published its findings, which were based on the number of drunk driving fatalities per 100,000 people in the state. Other places with high fatality rates include Washington D.C. and Connecticut, both of which outranked Rhode Island. According to the data collected, 41 percent of all traffic accident deaths in Rhode Island are caused by drunk drivers.  Across the nation in 2017, 34 percent of all traffic deaths were during the holidays, including Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Over the holidays, about 70 percent of all drunk driving deaths involve a driver with a particularly high blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.15 percent or above. The study found that Utah had the safest roads when it came to impaired drivers, followed by New Jersey.  Other states who made the top ten safest states in the country in regards to less drunk driving incidents include Mississippi, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Indiana, Georgia, Idaho and Tennessee.

Over the last two decades, the rate of impaired drivers has dropped significantly. Still, the number of victims who tragically die in crashes with impaired drivers is high, accounting for approximately one third of all crash deaths in the country.  In 2017, this meant 10,874 people lost their lives in the United States because of drunk driving.

It is well documented that most accidents can be prevented with a little extra care and safety education.  Since 1984, Montlick & Associates has been dedicated to keeping children and families safe on the roadway.  Our commitment runs deep through our extensive, award-winning public service programs that provide people the information they need to avoid injuries.  To learn about our Don't Drink and Drive Campaign, Child Passenger Safety Programs, Booster Seat Campaign and much more, visit montlick.com and click on “community service,” or simply click here.
