Police Successful in Zero Tolerance Program in Rome, Georgia

January 13, 2020

ROME, GA-  The police department in Rome, Georgia, is pleased with the results of its three-week-long holiday program to crack down on dangerous driving, according to COOSAVALLEYNEWS.COM. Operation Zero Tolerance involved patrolling and setting up stationary checkpoints to identify drivers who were violating the law and increasing the risk of traffic accidents.*

Officers in Rome issued 49 citations to motorists who were not using their seat belts, ten citations for people failing to use proper child restraint systems, 48 speeding tickets, 52 citations for drivers violating the hands-free law, and handed out six child safety seats to families in need.

The holiday period is marked with heavy traffic and an increase in vehicle collisions. Police now take an aggressive approach to catch violators before tragedies occur. The programs have shown success in keeping people on road safe throughout the holidays. Police stated that no severe injuries or fatalities were reported in the city limits during the increased vigilance period.

Holiday traffic leads to many complications, including a higher volume of vehicles on the road and more drunk drivers. Police across Georgia and in other parts of the country worked diligently to combat the elevated risks of driving during the holiday season by increasing their presence on the road and charging any drivers who were caught violating safety-related laws. While drunk driving rates declined in the state over the last decade, they increased within the last few years, indicating that impaired motorists are still presenting significant risks to everyone on the road. As of 2018, about 35 percent of people who died in car crashes in Georgia were killed in incidents involving a drunk driver.
