Police Aggressively Crack Down on Drivers Over New Year Holiday
AUGUSTA, GA - Officers in Georgia issued more than 5,000 driving citations to motorists around the state during the New Year travel period, according to WJBF.COM. The 30-hours around the holiday were busy for the police force, and the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) commended officers for their hard work policing the roads during the busy and often dangerous holiday.*
The number of traffic crashes did not increase as compared to other years in the past. According to police, more people are taking taxis and using rideshare services to travel when celebrating. Officers are encouraging citizens to continue to make this more responsible choice when attending social events involving alcohol.
Police checkpoints were used to find drivers who were under the influence, and officers said they still sometimes find drunk drivers operating vehicles with a passenger who is sober. The GSP responded to 103 crashes and arrested 106 motorists for driving under the influence. Two people tragically died in crashes around the state over the holiday period.
Drunk driving continues to be a problem on roadways throughout the United States. In 2019, about 25 percent of all traffic fatalities in Georgia were caused by a driver who was under the influence. While numbers dropped significantly over the years, these avoidable crashes still lead to about 30 unnecessary and tragic deaths every day across the country.
