Study Indicates North Carolina is Home to One of the Deadliest Intersections in the Country

January 03, 2020

RALEIGH, NC- Cbs17.com writes that a study conducted by Go Safe Labs found that the I-40/I-440 interchange ranks fifth in the country on a list of the most dangerous intersections. Go Safe Labs said that it hoped the study would indicate which roads people should avoid when traveling over the holidays.*

The research looked at 201,000 crashes that took place each December for 2016, 2017, and 2018 to come up with its findings. The report indicates that 26 crashes occurred on the North Carolina interchange during the time period of the study.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is challenging those findings. According to NDOT, the study itself is flawed. When it comes to which road is the most dangerous, officials in North Carolina say that looking at the number of crashes provides an incomplete picture. The cause of the collisions, the volume of traffic, and other considerations should also be taken into account when determining whether a road is hazardous.

The authors who published the study admitted that the results likely had reporting biases based on the methods of data collection used.

In another study, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that pedestrian deaths on interstates are increasing. The most dangerous scenario appears to be interstates where residential housing is on one side, and the other side has bus stops and shopping centers. Many of the deaths could likely be prevented if safe pedestrian crossings were constructed in these locations. On these roadways, vehicles are traveling at high rates of speed. About nine out of ten people struck by vehicles traveling 55 miles per hour will die from their injuries. Fast-moving vehicles and pedestrians do not mix.
