Police Report Fourteen Deaths in Georgia Over Christmas Holiday

December 30, 2019

GEORGIA- The writes that in just a 54-hour period surrounding Christmas, fourteen people died on the road in Georgia. While reports indicate that 26 people were killed over the holiday in 2018, those numbers include more than twice as much time as the travel period viewed in 2019.*

In addition to fatal collisions, police responded to 207 accidents, and 102 injuries. Across the state, 124 people were arrested for driving under the influence.

According to the AAA, more Americans will be traveling during the holidays this year than on any other year in the past, and a record number of holiday drivers, an estimated 104 million, will be on the road. Busy holiday travel is likely to continue to climb. Each year, for eight years in a row, new records have been set for holiday travel.

In Georgia, the AAA estimated more than three million people would be using the roads between December 21, and the first of January.

Troopers are now preparing to patrol the roads during the New Year holiday. Last year eighteen people died during the New Year period. In total, 550 accidents occurred during that time, and 223 people suffered injuries. Across the state, police arrested 368 drink drivers.

The main message that officials have for the public is not to drink and drive. While drunk driving rates declined significantly over the past few decades, about 25 percent of all vehicle-related deaths still involve alcohol. It is essential to plan ahead when attending social events that will include alcohol. Arrange a designated driver or use a ride share service. Drivers who make the irresponsible decision to get behind the wheel while intoxicated will face severe consequences.
